Dancing, gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away. No painting to show on walls and maybe hang in museums No poems to be printed and sold Nothing but that fleeting moment when you feel alive. It is not for unsteady souls (Merce Cunningham, n.d).
Through the study of Dance at Hillview School for Girls, students will develop their technical, expressive and choreographic skills, through the amazing opportunities offered to them. The students work with experienced professional dance practitioners and take part in workshops with professional dance companies such as Rambert.
The students have the chance to go to The Royal Ballet School to watch a rehearsal of the company’s repertoire and then view the live performance. Students perform at many prestigious events throughout the course. Students have opportunities throughout the year to attend the theatre to see a variety of professional dance works. Other trips include New York to dance at the Merce Cunningham Dance Studios and learn repertoire from a Broadway Show. This experience develops analytical and choreographic skills and also enriches the students’ cultural experiences.
As part of the course the students will gain a broad knowledge of constituent features of dance, all aspects of dance history, anatomy in action and skills that are transferable for the future. This strand of the course will be extremely beneficial for the students if they wish to pursue their professional dance training, but the course will also be beneficial and complementary for a degree in Science, English, Drama, Musical Theatre and or Media courses.
Past students have gone on to study at London Contemporary Dance School, Trinity Laban, London Studios and many more.
